The Story of the Rodriguez Family

Mr. Rodriguez is a US Marshall and works long hours. His wife, a stay at home mom, works long hours home schooling and raising their son enrolled at Classical Academy. Recently, Mrs. Rodriguez volunteered on campus and wanted to log her volunteer time. She left her husband a note. “Please log my volunteer hours on the school’s website,” and then went to bed for the evening.

When Mr. Rodriguez arrived home that evening late, he found his wives note and logged on to the school’s website for the very first time. Inputting hours was his goal until he clicked on the INVEST link on the front page of the website.

He began to read that the school encouraged individuals, businesses, and companies to give to the school. He could sponsor a classroom, the school, or all three schools. He then left that site and found out how to enter his wives volunteer hours and went to bed.

The following day he called the school. “I would like to give some money to the school” he said. That he would like to get off work early on Friday so that he could come in.

Friday and Mr. Rodriguez and his wife arrived on campus. After speaking a few short moments with our Chief Business Officer, Cameron Curry, he reached into his wives purse and pulled out their checkbook.

Slowly writing and signing the check he looked up to say, “I would like to sponsor my son’s classroom. How much is that?” “$1,500”, I said. “Well, I think we will give you $1,600,” was his reply.

Cameron followed up with the fact that with their donation he and his wife would be the “coolest parents on campus” by having their names on a plaque on their son’s classroom door. He smiled and said that they were pleased to be helping the school and the plaque was not necessary, but was a nice touch.

Then he asked, “So is that enough money, or should we be giving more?” I said that most of our donors gave annually but that they should feel free to give at anytime and for any amount. “We will be giving you more” was their parting words as turned to leave.

“I would like to tell your story, Mr. Rodriguez”, I said. He replied, “Why?” “To encourage more parents like yourselves to be involved and to join the Cool Parents Club. “ They smiled, said yes, and left.
